Valsartan and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system: blood pressure control and beyond
Björn Dahlöf

AT1-receptor blockade with valsartan lowers blood pressure, is well-tolerated, reverses target organ damage and promises benefits beyond BP lowering. AT1-receptor blockade may well become the leading route of tackling hypertension and associated cardiovascular problems. Valsartan can prevent remodelling, microalbuminuria and atherosclerosis, and improve endothelial dysfunction. A series of large studies comprising more than 35,000 patients, including VALUE,20 Val-HeFT,21 VALIANT22 and ABCD-2V, will in the near future provide important data on the effect of valsartan on mortality and morbidity.
