Volume 1, Number 2, December 2000Saving lives: long-term morbidity and mortality trials with selective angiotensin receptor blocker therapy Clinical research with ACE inhibitors in the management of hypertension has suggested that blockade of the RAAS may provide benefits above that of blood pressure reduction alone. This putative advantage is now being tested in a series of trials with selective ARBs. These studies will provide an impressive body of evidence on morbidity and mortality outcomes with ARB therapy. Data will be available less than a decade after the introduction of ARBs, in contrast with the 20 years that elapsed after the advent of ACE inhibitors before similar information emerged. ARBs show great potential for benefit beyond BP reduction and the trials, particularly VALUE, will have a major impact on the future role of this important new class of drugs. JRAAS 2000;1:17-20.
