New clinical investigations with selective angiotensin II receptor blocker therapy in diabetes and renal disease
Luis M Ruilope

The kidney should not be considered an isolated organ, since manifestations of renal damage, such as hyperfiltration, microalbuminuria and proteinuria, are usually accompanied by a higher prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy in heart failure and a higher risk of cardiovascular death. Thus, therapy that benefits the kidney will also be beneficial to the cardiovascular system. Valsartan is showing great promise both as an antihypertensive and in providing greater protection for the kidney.
