Promise of prevention and reversal of target organ involvement in hypertension
Edward D Frohlich

The history of antihypertensive therapy has documented impressive reductions in stroke, coronary heart disease, and the major hypertensive emergencies. In contrast, there has been no reduction in the prevalence of cardiac and renal failure associated with hypertensive cardiovascular disease. Our studies demonstrate that some of the newer antihypertensive drugs (ACE-I, AT1-receptor antagonists, and, at least, certain calcium antagonists) may reverse these pathophysiological lesions. We look forward to the results of ongoing, well controlled, and prospective studies.
